Saídos da casa da servidão: a escravidão na Bíblia e sua influência no Brasil e nos Estados Unidos

Resumen

Para a escravidão a Bíblia foi uma arma de dois gumes: de um lado deu o drama inspirador do Êxodo, alimentando sonhos de emancipação, e oferecendo um marco único na história –o advento de uma grande religião que coincidiu com a libertação de um povo; e também humanizando a condição do escravo com leis que são excepcionais na época. Por outro lado, tanto o Velho como o Novo Testamento contribuíram para dar sanção religiosa à escravidão, apresentando-a como uma instituição aprovada por Deus. O trabalho ressalta as grandes diferenças entre a escravidão no Antigo Oriente, de um tipo tradicional e relativamente benigno, e o regime de monocultura das Américas, em que o sistema de exploração do trabalho era reforçado pela diferença racial, identificando negro com escravo e erguendo uma barreira de preconceito que não existia na Antiguidade. O trabalho examina em detalhe os seguintes aspectos da influência da Bíblia: 1) as diferenças entre a escrava concubina na Bíblia e a exploração sexual da escrava nas Américas; 2) a narrativa do Êxodo e sua grande importância como modelo; 3) a "maldição de Cam" e sua utilização para estigmatizar os africanos; 4) o repouso sabático da Lei Mosaica e o modo como foi aplicado nas Américas; 5) o ideal da libertação do “ano do Jubileu” e seu significado profundo, rejeitando uma “propriedade perpétua” de pessoas e terras. From the point of view of slavery the Bible has played a double edged role: on the one hand it gave history the inspiring drama of the Exodus, which provides a unique landmark - the emergence of a grat religion coinciding with a people's liberation; and also giving a more human face to the slave's condition through laws which were very advanced for their time. On the other hand, both the Old and the New Testament gave a kind of religious sanction to slavery, presenting it as an institution approved by God. The paper emphasizes the considerable differences between slavery in the Ancient Near East, of a traditional and comparatively mild kind, and the industrial slavery fo the Americas based on cash crops; With the exploitation of African labour being reinforced by a barrier of racial prejudice which did not exist in Ancient Times. The author examines in detail the following aspects of the influence of the Bible: 1) the striking differences between the status Of the concubine slave in the bible and the ruthless sexual exploitation of slave women in the Americas; 2) the Exodus narrative and its crucial importance as a model and precedent for liberation; 3) the "curse of Ham" and its use by Europeans in order to brand the African as justly condemned to slavery; 4) the Sabbath rest in the Jewish law and how was applied (or disregarded) in negro slavery in the Americas;5) the ideal of liberation n the "year of the Jubillee" and its deep significance, rejecting notions of absolute property both of persons and of land.
