Abstract

Brazil is experiencing the fertility postponement, characterized by an increase in the mean age at which women have children. In Demography, these changes are defined as a tempo effect, which has traditionally been measured using census data. The improvement in the quality of SINASC data allows its use in the calculation of fertility indicators. The objectives of this paper are: to apply the model developed by Bongaarts and Feeney (BF model) between 2010 and 2020, and to test the use of SINASC data in the analysis of fertility postponement. Brazil and great regions are the units of analysis. We used 2010, 2015 and 2020 SINASC microdata and IBGE population projections. Results demonstrate the good quality of SINASC data and indicate the maintenance of the fertility postponement in Brazil – which potentialize the decline in observed fertility levels in Brazil and regions.
