Abstract

This study aims toto describe the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of maternal mortality caused by COVID-19 in a reference maternity hospital in the Northeast of Brazil. It was performed a retrospective, descriptive, case series study making use of the Mortality Data System, hospital investigation forms and death record analysis occurring in the years 2020 and 2021 and accounted by the hospital’s committee on mortality. As a result, There were 24 maternal deaths caused by COVID-19, 22 during pregnancy; in woman median age 30 years (interquartile range: 25,5 – 37,0 years). Most deaths occurred in residents of other municipalities of Piauí (17), with partner (13), had other children (18), had antenatal check-ups (16), with less than six consultations (9), delivery/abortion assisted at a reference maternity hospital (23), by obstetricians (23), deliveries were C-sections (12), assisted in the maternal ICU (24), and had not been vaccinated against COVID-19 (24). In terms of pathologies, 11 of them were obese and 11 had secondary infection to COVID-19. Therefore, There was an increase in maternal deaths caused by COVID-19 between 2020 and 2021, especially in young women, during pregnancy and with comorbidities and clinical complications.
