Abstract

This study aims to analyze the temporal trend of maternal mortality and describe sociodemographic characteristics and causes of death in the macro-regions of Piauí. It was an ecological time series study, with data from the Mortality Information System, from 2006 to 2021, analyzed using Prais-Winsten regression. It were calculated maternal mortality ratios for the state, macro-regions per four-year period. 666 maternal deaths and 781,074 live births were identified . Deaths occurred in black women (81.1%), aged 20 to 39 years (78.5%), with a partner (45.4%), less than 8 years of schooling (43.7%), paid occupation (39 .5%), having as causes: hypertensive syndromes (26.2%), hemorrhages (10.9%), infections (10.8%), abortion (4.2%), COVID-19 (3.8%). The maternal mortality ratio in the state, in the period, was 85.3 per 100,000 live births with a stationary trend (Annual Percentage Variation (APV): 0.03; 95% CI: -2.1; 2.2). The semi-arid macro-regions (VPA: 31.6; 95% CI: 9.7; 57.8) in the period from 2006 to 2009, Mid-North (VPA: 9.8; 95% CI: 1.2; 19.5) and Cerrados (VPA: 25.9; 95% CI: 1.6; 56.0), between 2018 and 2021. So, we concluded that Deaths occurred mainly in black women, with less education, from preventable causes. The maternal mortality ratio in the state was high with a stationary trend.
