Agricultura. Territórios. Governança, arranjos. ABSTRACT v.32, n. 2, p. 183-219, jul./dez., 2008. In the last few years, the issue of governance has become a growing concern of the territorial actors who seek to associate all the stakeholders to the definition of sustainable development initiatives. This is true both in the North and in the South. It is also a new area of research for researchers who try to understand why and how actors in the field pass from a hierarchical coordination mode to a more participatory mode. This passage is far from obvious; it requires a rearrangement. The actors will either make use of already existing devices and tools and adapt them to their needs, or they will invent new ones to face the challenges of sustainable development. We propose an analysis of a Brazilian case through the eyes of French researchers, specialists on the topic in France. Beyond the specificities, the analysis shows the similarity of the reflections in progress and the need for reinforcing research on and evaluations of territorial engineering.
